Pro sports: It's tragic if they do reflect us

With next Sunday's Super Bowl teams decided by Sunday's NFL games, the week of non-stop chatter about the big game began immediately.

One radio quipster got a laugh by noting that the St. Louis Rams are leading the contenders in convicted felons, by having two more than the New England Patriots.

Not only do we laugh, we accept that the professional football rosters are dotted with felons.

Then there is the drug abuse ... and spouse beating ... and chest-beating self indulgence ... plus disregard for laws they we all are supposed to follow.

All are found among the ranks of professional athletes in a variety of sports.

We indirectly endorse all that as we watch them on TV, buy the trademark products and purchase tickets.

Do the worst of the pro athletes reflect our society? They do as long as we sanction what they do with our dollars and time.
