Dragons get strong pitching in sweep of St. Francis
Tiffin University's Jesse Schrader tossed a five-hit shutout, and Tim McDonald had a big sixth inning hit in each half of a doubleheader sweep of St. Francis.
Schrader struck out seven in a complete game as the Dragons won, 2-0. McDonald's single in the bottom of the sixth, scored both Richard Leach and Phil Sabatka. Leach had two singles in the game.
Francisco Ortiz, Kipp Huntsberger and Casey Smith each added a single.
McDonald blasted a two-run homer in the sixth inning of the second game to help lift the Dragons to a 6-3 win. Brian Smith got the pitching win in relief.
Doubles came from Ortiz (two runs, RBI, stolen base), Leach (RBI) and Brian McGee (run). Josh Curry smacked an RBI base hit, as did Huntsberger.
"We've given up three earned runs in the last four games, which is a great confidence builder for our pitching staff," Tiffin University coach Lonny Allen said. "We've struggled in that area, so it's nice to see this happen and hopefully it will carry over."
The Dragons, who improved to 11-14, are at Malone for a pair of American Mideast Conference games Tuesday.
Errors hurt Dragons in loss, but not in win
Tiffin University's softball team committed three errors in each half of a doubleheader with St. Francis, but the time those errors were committed made the difference between victory and defeat in a split.
"Including Sunday, we've played every day since Wednesday, so the schedule hasn't been real kind," TU softball coach Ron Schumacher said. "We're not playing well defensively at all. The only difference between the first game and the second game was that we made errors with runners on base in the first game. We actually made them earn the runs in the second game. We can't give games away like we did today."
St. Francis won game one, 5-4. Emily Renaud had two runs on two hits offensively for the Dragons, and Christy Prast and Kim Lawson (RBI) also did damage at the plate with doubles. Lori Bumb and Colleen Hall had a hit, a run and an RBI each. Renee Whaley took the loss in a complete game effort, walking three and striking out three.
Robin Farrand was the winning pitcher in the second game for Tiffin, which is 9-10 on the season. Michelle Slark puted up a save.
Erica McGee doubled in a pair of runs for TU. Liz Klein and Tiffany Lamp had a hit and a run scored each, and Jodi Moritz singled.
Tiffin is at Northern Kentucky University Tuesday.
