![]() March 26, 1999 Administration: Tiffin will do what EPA decides By David Crawford Tiffin officials said the city will do whatever Ohio EPA instructs it to do in regard to an old landfill Thursday morning. They accompanied Ohio EPA officials on a tour of the former Tiffin City Landfill. Mayor Bernard Hohman headed a seven-member city delegation. They accompanied three Ohio EPA officials on an inspection of the conditions and surface water runoff at the CR 90 site. After the inspection, Hohman and City Landfill Task Force chairman Wayne Stephens said the city will do whatever Ohio EPA says is needed. Hohman said Thursday's tour was his first opportunity to view the former landfill since 1996. He said it was his first time to see the northern portion of the former landfill and its proximity to the Sandusky River. Hohman said he has asked the City Council to appropriate funds for the hiring of a consulting firm to advise the city on implementing any Ohio EPA requests regarding the landfill. Scott Lockhart of Hull & Associates, one of the possible consulting firms to advise the city, accompanied the Ohio EPA inspectors at Hohman's request. Although Stephens said he did not see anything new from the last time he visited the site, he said some surface remediation is needed. It would include some of the standing water at the site and removal of surface trash in other areas. He said the city will attempt to view the interior of a tile that drains from a nearby farm field through the landfill, emptying in a ravine on the east side of the landfill, by using the city's sewer camera. "Whatever the EPA instructs us, we will do," Stephens said. The Tiffin delegation included Hohman, Stephens, City Law Director Brent Howard, Public Works Director Sue Kuhn, Assistant Public Works Director Mike Huffman, Water Pollution Control Center Superintendent Brad Borer, and Assistant Superintendent Emmitt Mullins. |
