Sheriff's office gets new police dog, digital camera

The Seneca County Prosecutor listed the purchase of a police dog and a digital camera for the sheriff's office as major accomplishments for the first quarter.

County Prosecutor Kenneth Egbert Jr. said the total expenditure for the dog, equipment and training was about $9,000. The camera was about $500.

The money for the purchases came from forfeitures and drug fines, Egbert said. Bullet proof vests for all three police dogs in the county &emdash; Fostoria's, Tiffin's and Seneca County's -- are to be purchased with forfeiture money, as well. Egbert said this is a way to safeguard the county's investment in the dogs.

Egbert said the prosecutor's office is to move into the AEP building April 28. Currently, the prosecutor's office is on Jefferson Street, in the same building with the county commissioners and the title department of the clerk of courts.

Also, according to the prosecutor's quarterly report -- including information from January, February and March -- Tiffin police continued, as last year, to submit the most cases.

Of the 55 new Seneca County felony cases, Tiffin submitted 20. Fostoria had 17, the sheriff's office and the Seneca County Drug Task Force both had six, and other agencies were involved in five new cases.

There were a total of 94 felony charges filed, of which 28 were theft-related, 19 were sex offenses, 21 were drug-related and 19 were assaults.

Egbert said this was consistent with other quarterly reports since he took office in January, 1999.

The juvenile division prosecuted 108 youths and 143 adults in Seneca County Juvenile Court. There were 99 delinquency charges, 11 unruly charges and 14 contributing charges.

Of those, 22 charges related to physical assaults, and 11 were thefts.

Tiffin again submitted the most cases, 37, while Fostoria followed with 28. The village police departments added nine and the sheriff's office added 8.

The civil division reviewed and approved 44 contracts for legal sufficiency.
