July 26, 2000 Reduced plea ends former teacher's sex case By Jefferson Wolfe A retired teacher and driving instructor pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor sex charges involving a former student he later married. Five felony sexual battery charges were dropped. Daniel C. Jacobs, 57, Fairborn, pleaded guilty Monday in Seneca County Common Pleas Court to corruption of a minor and sexual conduct contributing to the unruliness of a child. Jacobs has not been sentenced. Judge Steve Shuff has ordered a pre-sentence investigation. Jacobs was ruled to be a sexually-oriented offender, the least restrictive of the three classifications under Ohio's sex offender law. At the time of the alleged offenses, from Dec. 21, 1997-April 4, 1998, Christy (Lofton) Jacobs was 18 and a student at Columbian High School, where he was a driving instructor. The two later married. The charges stem from the fact that Jacobs had been her teacher, County Prosecutor Kenneth Egbert previously said. According to court documents, police received a set of photos from Wal-Mart film processing, which depicted a man wearing only underwear and a young woman, who appeared to be a youth, with no clothing. The investigation determined the identity of the people in the pictures. Documents state Christy Jacobs admitted she had an affair with Daniel. She said he had been her instructor for driver's training when she was at Columbian High School. Reportedly, she told authorities the pictures were not taken under any duress. Documents state Daniel Jacobs also admitted to the sexual activity. |
