Solution in sight for Fostoria sewer problem

FOSTORIA -- More than 200 home owners under orders by the Environmental Protection Agency to address sewer problems may have a feasible solution in sight.

Fostoria City Council Tuesday night gave a first reading to an ordinance approving extending sanitary sewer water areas in the Wood County Water and Sewer District along US 23.

The ordinance was prompted by the possible location of a steel plant expected to be located near Rising Sun on US 23. The site would be about four miles from Fostoria.

If approved, the Wood County Water and Sewer District would pay for the construction of water and sewer lines to the area. The district would also maintain the lines in the future.

However, Fostoria would provide the water and treat the sewage for a 25 percent surcharge from the properties.

If the lines are constructed, the project could also meet the needs of the northend residents.

"These houses have been waiting for funding for a long time. They are under EPA orders to do something. They're close to having the funding and I believe it would be best for the environment for them to be in our waste-water treatment plant,'' said Mayor Jim Bailey.

In other business, council:

  • Approved spending about $22,000 to participate with Seneca County in bidding and contracting for taking comprehensive high resolution aerial photos of the city and surrounding areas. The total cost of the project is $132,000.
  • Agreed to apply for Issue II money for the sewer separation project for Northview Drive, Woodward, Eastern, Oaklawn, Glenwood avenues and Circle Drive.
  • Agreed to hire Peterman Associates for engineering services for the LindaView Addition storm-sewer project.
