John Gordon Dunkelberger
General Electric retiree

John Gordon Dunkelberger, 82, 469 Coe St., died at 12:15 a.m. Monday, April 17, 2000, in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, Toledo.

He was born in Selinsgrove, Pa., Dec. 19, 1917, to Henry Edward and Esther M. (Gordon) Dunkelberger. On March 15, 1941, in Washington, D.C., he married Arlene A. Drinkwater. She survives.

Survivors also include: three sons, John Gordon Dunkelberger II of Urbana, Ill., Richard David Dunkelberger of Groveport and Robert Allen Dunkelberger of Bloomsburg, Pa.; two daughters, Mrs. Henry (Rachel Elizabeth) Fowler of Evanston, Ill., and Rebecca Ann Dunkelberger of San Diego, Calif; and two grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were a son and two sisters.

Mr. Dunkelberger, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, having served in New Guinea and the Philippines, retired as a machinist from the General Electric Co.

A high school graduate, he attended Apprentice School of the U.S. Naval Gun Factory in Washington, D.C.

He was a member of American Legion Post 169, VFW Post 2858, the National Rifle Association, Ohio Highway Patrol Auxiliary, 118th Seabees Runion Association and the G.E. Quarter Century Club.

A member of Washington Street United Methodist Church, he also was a volunteer driver for FISH, the Red Cross, Sandusky Domestic Violence Shelter and for patients needing rides to hospitals in Cleveland, Toledo, Akron and Columbus.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home, with the Rev. Larry Smith officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, where military graveside services will be conducted by the United Veterans Council.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be made to the church.

Bernard C. Wise
Retired mechanic

Former Tiffin resident, Bernard C. Wise, 78, of Okeechobee, Fla., died at 10:55 p.m. Friday, April 14, 2000, at his daughter's home in Palm Springs, Fla.

He was born in Bellevue Jan. 22, 1922, to Henry and Loretta (Roth) Wise. He married Dorothy Bork May 8, 1943, in St. Joseph Catholic Church. She died July 29, 1975. On June 17, 1978, in West Palm Beach, Fla., he married Evelyn Pitts Benton. She survives in Okeechobee.

Other survivors include: two sons, Bernard C. Wise Jr. of Perrysburg and Robert Wise of Tiffin; two daughters, Christine Wise of Palm Springs and Mrs. Larry (Susan) Weinandy of Streetsboro, Ohio; three stepsons, Gary and Glen Benton, both of Lake Worth, Fla., and David Benton of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Linda Clayton of Tampa, Fla.; four sisters, Mrs. Donald (Margaret) Kimmet of Kansas, Ohio, Sister Marie Catherine Wise RSM of Tiffin, Mrs. James (Emelda) Clouse of New Riegel and Mrs. Bernard (Alma) Wurm of Bloomville; three brothers, Ambrose Wise of Tiffin, James Wise of McCutchenville and Luke Wise of Republic; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A stepson, Steve Benton; a brother, Louis Wise; and three sisters, Kathleen and Henrietta Wise and Adaline Heitz, also are deceased.

Mr. Wise, who retired as a mechanic from R.D. Buick in Tiffin, later worked as a mechanic at Roger Dean Chevrolet in West Palm Beach.

A resident of Tiffin until 1972, he was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tiffin, and a lifetime member of the Eagles.

A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, where the rosary will be recited at 10:45 a.m. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday in the Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Bernard C. Wise Family Fund.

Morris M. Arter
Fourth generation Wyandot farmer

Morris M. Arter, 84, of CH 44, Upper Sandusky, died at 2:35 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2000, in the Wyandot Manor Nursing Home, Upper Sandusky.

He was born April 21, 1915, in Wyandot County, to Orton and Bertha (Bower) Arter. On Nov. 25, 1943, in Upper Sandusky, he married Gladys Little. She survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Richard Arter of Dayton and David Arter of Sycamore; three grandchildren; and two sisters, Helen Kemp of Warren and Ruth Failor of Upper Sandusky.

Mr. Arter, a 1933 graduate of Eden High School, was a fourth generation Wyandot County farmer.

A lifelong member of Union United Methodist Church, rural Upper Sandusky, he enjoyed working in his machine shop and was mechanically gifted.

The Rev. Sonja Bender will be the officiant at the 3 p.m. Saturday service in the Lucas Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Upper Sandusky.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Wyandot County or the Mohawk Boosters.

Virginia T. 'Ginny' Brown
Retired school teacher

Virginia T. "Ginny" Brown, 75, of 108 Beckwith Drive, Carey, died at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, 2000, in Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus.

She was born in Carey, Jan. 2, 1925, to Henry and Maria (Marano) Odone. Her husband, Henry P. "Hank" Brown, whom she married May 29, 1948, died April 9, 1996.

Survivors include: two sons, David A. Brown of South Bend, Ind., and Ralph H. Brown of St. Paul, Minn.; two daughters, Dr. Catherine B. Chambers of Uniontown and Mary T. Cerny-Brown of Reston, Va.; eight grandchildren; and a brother, Daniel Odone of Carey.

Mrs. Brown, a retired school teacher, taught in Harpster and at St. Peter and Paul's School in Beaver, Pa.

A 1943 graduate of Carey High School and a 1947 graduate of Miami University of Ohio, Oxford, she was a member of the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church, Carey, and its Rosary Altar Society.

A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church, with the Rev. Benjamin Knopp officiating. A Christian burial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary's Cemetery, Carey.

Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. Friday and 10-11 a.m. Saturday in the Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey. The rosary will be recited at 2 p.m. and a scripture service will be at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Franciscan Mission Association or a charity of the donor's choice.

Margaret P. Reber
Retired bank employee

Margaret P. Reber, 80, of 9408 CH 134, Nevada, died at 9:16 a.m. Monday, April 17, 2000, in the Fairhaven Health Care Community, Upper Sandusky.

She was born in Eden Township, Wyandot County, Feb. 28, 1920, to Clarence and Hazel (Heistand) Brown. Her husband, E. Lewis Reber, whom she married Oct. 10, 1942, in Eden Township, died May 11, 1994.

Surviving are: two sons, Steven R. Reber of Upper Sandusky and Larry L. Reber of Strongsville; a daughter, Mrs. Curtis (Sandra S.) Pippen of Glendale, Ariz.; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild; and a sister, Mrs. Wendell (Barbara C.) Myers of Carey.

A grandson, Scott Pippen, died in 1969; and a brother, Karl Brown and a sister, Helen Rothlisberger, also are deceased.

Mrs. Reber, a 1938 graduate of Eden Township School, attended Marion Business College 1938-41.

She had worked for the First Citizen National Bank, Upper Sandusky, retiring in 1982, after 20 years in the accounting department. She also worked on the family farm.

A 60-year active member of Salem United Methodist Church, Eden Township, rural Upper Sandusky, she served on the board, as financial auditor, member and treasurer of the United Methodist Women; served on the visiting committee, made religious banners, brought flowers to the church Spring through Fall; was a member of the Quilting Guild and quilted for the Festival of Caring for the Missions. A former Sunday school teacher, she helped with Bible school; was formerly a church youth adviser; and helped with many church luncheons.

A former 4-H adviser, she also was a member of the Peace Maker Quilting Club, Wyandot County Farm Bureau and the Nevada Lioness Club, which she served as treasurer and past president.

Her hobbies included quilting, sewing, crafts, gardening and bridge.

The Rev. Sonja Bender will be the officiant at the 11 a.m. Saturday service in the Bringman Clark and Company Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Upper Sandusky.

Visitation will be 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
