Margaret I. Zeis
Co-owner of Zeis Funeral home
Margaret I. Zeis, 83, of rural Tiffin, died at 5:45 a.m., Thursday, June 25, 1998, after a June 4th admittance to the Convoy Care Center, Convoy, Ohio. She was born in Crestline on June 7, 1915, to James and Pearl (McCurdy) Overly. Her first marriage was Oct. 31, 1942, to Forrest Zeis; he died in Nov. 21, 1982. On Sept. 16, 1984, she married George Zeis in Tiffin, and he survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Richard Zeis of Walker, Iowa; a daughter, Peg Zeis of Convoy, Ohio; a twin sister, Martha Ziebold of Fremont; and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Zeis was a graduate of Crestline High School and the Tiffin Business University. She was a homemaker and co-owner, with her husband Forrest, of the Zeis Funeral Home. She was a member of the Shiloh United Methodist Church and attended the Congregational United Church of Christ, Naples, Fla. She was also a member of the Eastern Star and a Past Matron.
The Rev. James Mussman will officiate the 2 p.m., Saturday, June 27, 1998, service at the Shiloh United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Shiloh cemetery.
Visitation hours are 3-5 and 7-9 p.m., today at the Turner-Engle Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Shiloh United Methodist Church.
Marguerite Z. Zahn
Tiffin resident
Marguerite Z. Zahn, 97, of 182 St. Francis Ave., Tiffin died at 2:50 p.m., Thursday, June 25, 1998, at the St. Francis Home, Tiffin. She was born Dec. 25, 1900, in Carey to Frank and Rose (Brown) Simonis. In June 1921 she married L. Norman Zahn in Carey; he died in November 1957.
Surviving are: two sons, Donald Maurice Zahn of Moorehead City, N.C. and Wayne E. Zahn of Tiffin and Sanibel Island, Fla.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were two brothers, Giles and Cyril Simonis.
Mrs. Zahn was a high-school graduate and attended Tiffin University. She was a homemaker and her memberships were in the following organizations: St. Joseph Catholic Church; Garden Club of Wyandot County; Emblem Club; Rosary-Alter Society and the St. Francis Auxiliary.
The Rev. Richard Dunn will officiate the Memorial Mass at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 29, 1998 at the St. Francis Home Chapel. Burial will be at Spring Grove Cemetery, Carey.
There will be no visitation hours.
Hoffman-Gottfried Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the St. Francis Home; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
Roger A. Mehrman
Former area resident
Roger A. Mehrman, 46, of Columbus, formerly of Fostoria and Tiffin, died at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 24, 1998, at Doctors Hospital, Columbus. He was born Nov. 5, 1951, in Fostoria to Henry and Elenore (Drenning) Mehrman; his father had passed away.
Surviving are: his mother, Mrs. Ernest (Elenore) Bowman of Fostoria; two brothers, Terry D. Mehrman of Fostoria and Robert E. Mehrman of Tiffin; and a sister, Mrs. William Allen (Margo) Long of Denver, CO.
Mr. Mehrman was a 1969 graduate of Tiffin Columbian High School. He attended the Ohio State University, Tiffin University and Mount Vernon Bible College, receiving a bachelor
s degree in 1982. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He became pastor and member with the Living Word Christian Ministries in Columbus. He was active in the American Red Cross, manned a community action hot-line, and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars, all in Columbus. A very active member in the state Republican party, he was selected to be Outstanding Young Man in America in 1987. Mr. Mehrman was also a past board member of the Tiffin Boy Rangers.
The Rev. Jerry L. Morgan will officiate the 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 29, 1998, service at the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria. He will be buried at the Memory Gardens, near Arcadia.
Visitation hours are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Sunday, June 28 at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Four Square Gospel Church, Fostoria.
Kenneth Gillett
Retired dairy farmer
Kenneth Gillett, 78, of 213 N. Main St., Attica, died Wednesday, June 24, 1998, at Quality Care Nursing Center, Willard, after an illness of several months. He was born Sept. 19, 1919, in Attica to LaVern and Hazel (Hartman) Gillet. On June 15, 1961, he married Mary Acker, and she died in May 1997.
Survivors are: seven nephews, Robert Claus of Shelby, Richard Claus of Westerville, Eugene Claus and Frederick Claus of Galion, Thomas Claus of North Robinson, Ralph Claus Jr. of Bucyrus, and Eric Gillett of Attica; five nieces, Roxanne Claus of Bucyrus, Karen (Gillett) Kishman of Huron, Debra (Gillett) Wilt of Bascom, Tammy Gillett of Tiffin, and Kimberly (Gillett) Ball of Attica; two step-sons, Carl King of Toledo and Donald King of Attica.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister, Maxine Claus; and two brothers, Chester and Russell Gillett.
Mr. Gillett was a dairy farmer, retiring in 1976. He was very involved in harness racing. He was a member of Attica Eagles 4112 and former Attica Fair Board Member for many years.
The Rev. Malcolm J. Brook will officiate the 11 a.m., Saturday, June 27, 1998, service at the Lindsey-Olds Funeral Home, 3085 S. SR 19, Bloomville. Burial will be at Attica-Venice Cemetery in Attica.
Visitation hours are from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., today, at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Willard Mercy Hospital Foundation.
James A. Gernert
Former resident
James A. Gernert, 56, of 84 East North Ave., East Palestine, Ohio, formerly from Tiffin and Republic, died at 1:22 a.m., Thursday, June 25, 1998, at the Salem Community Hospital where he was admitted after becoming ill at home. He was born Jan. 17, 1942, in Tiffin to Mary A. (Garvin) Gernert and the late Charles J. Gernert. On July 1, 1967, he married Virginia Smith; she survives.
Other survivors include: a daughter, Miss Ann C. Gernert of New Waterford, Ohio; a brother, Michael C. Gernert of Columbiana, Ohio; and his grandmother,Mrs. Lenora Garvin of North Lima, Ohio.
Mr. Gernert was a Vietnam veteran, having served in the U.S. Marines from 1960 to 1964, followed by a two-year tour of duty with the U.S. Navy from 1964 through 1966. For the past four years, he had been employed with ER Advanced Ceramics, East Palestine. He was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church of East Palestine.
The Rev. William Zeyer will officiate the 11 a.m., Saturday, June 27, 1998, service at the Oliver-Linsley Funeral Home, 644 East Main St., East Palestine, Ohio 44413. Burial will be at Crest Haven Memorial Gardens, New Waterford.
Visitation hours are from 7-9 p.m., today at the funeral home.
The family has asked that Memorial tributes take the form of donations to the East Palestine Emergency Medical Technicians.
