John O. Fleming
Green Springs/Bellevue residents' father

John O. Fleming, 86, died Thursday afternoon, Oct. 27, 2000, at his residence at 13301 Kelly Road, Milan, following a long illness.

He was born Sept. 11, 1914, in Perkins Township, to John A. and Mary A. (Hall) Fleming. His wife of 63 years, Mary Ellen (Swartz) Fleming, survives.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Barbara) Tusing of Green Springs and Mrs. Donald (Margaret Jane) Jackson of New London; two sons, Edward Fleming of Bellevue and Richard "Dick" Fleming of Vickery; 15 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, nine step-great-grandchldren and six step-great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Bruce J. Fleming of Port Clinton; a sister, Mary Lichtle of Sandusky; and nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by a grandson; a brother, Joseph B. Fleming; two half-brothers and five half-sisters.

Mr. Fleming, a 1933 graduate of Sandusky High School, was the co-owner/founder and service manager of the Sandusky Equipment Co. and the International Harvester Dealership. He also was the owner of Fleming Farm Drainage and had done a lot of custom combining and backhoe work over the years.

He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, where he served on the church council, as president, vice president and secretary, church park board, church building committee and as junior youth advisor.

He was a member and past chairman of the Erie County Farm Bureau Board; where he was a delegate to Washington D.C.

He also was a member of the Groton Rangers Farm Bureau Council for more than 50 years; member of the Enterprise Farm Bureau Councils; served on the Erie County 4-H camp board for more than 30 years; received two awards for Meritorious Service for Erie County 4-H; was a Groton Township constable, soil and water board member and received the Conservationist of the Year Award in 1976.

He was a charter member of the Erie County Heritage Society; member and past vice chairman of the Milan Rod and Gun Club; board member of the Central Erie Elevator; past member of the Milan Odd Fellows; past member of the Sandusky Moose; one of the organizers of the Erie County Agricultural Society; member of Ohio Public Service, the Cree Camping Club and the Erie County Democrats.

He traveled and video taped extensively throughout Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States including Hawaii and Alaska for Calco Travel. He also was a fishing enthusiast and rebuilt player pianos.

The service was Monday in St. John's United Church of Christ, Oxford Township, with the Rev. Wayne Chasney officiating. Burial was in York Chapel Cemetery, Bellevue.

Marian L. Rice, 79, died at 7:21 a.m. Monday, Oct. 30, in the Independence House, Fostoria. Arrangements are pending at the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria.
