Junkers, other cars harmful to health

Ever found yourself standing in a cloud of noxious fumes after a poorly-tuned junker was just driven past?

There are some cars and trucks out there that leave a vapor trail of poisonous hydrocarbons for all bystanders to breathe.

The next time it happens to you, consider that for each one like that, there are thousands of vehicles on the road that are somewhere in between the smoke generators and the cars that are properly tuned and burning fuel efficiently.

That means that the ones that aren't noticeable are probably generating hundreds of times the bad fumes that the junkers put out.

Emission limits and required checks would be a pain in the posterior. Just ask any Californian.

But are they something Ohioans should pursue in order to protect their air, lungs and health?

Public officials and citizens who are interested in such things should take a close look at this issue. There's no denying that breathing in hydrocarbon vapors - and the chemicals that result when they interact with other pollutants - is harmful.

Ohioans might be smart to keep their air from becoming so bad that emission limits would become an obvious answer.
