County expecting savings on defense of indigent

No public defender's office?

That's the way it's going to be after Aug. 3 in Seneca County.

The county commissioners have opted for an alternate plan that has legal defense of indigent defendants contracted out to private attorneys.

Using comparative figures from Sandusky County - a county similar in population that uses the approach being adopted here - it appears that Seneca County will enjoy significant savings.

It is estimated that the local cost could be half what it would be if the public defender's office were to be continued.

Sandusky County officials also have found no problems with the quality of defense efforts for indigent persons.

Giving the projected savings, it would be difficult to argue that the public defender's office should be retained.

The proof - as always - will be in the results.
