Leadership of honorees is of lasting importance

There are years for which the Outstanding Citizenship awards presented by the Tiffin Area Chamber of Commerce seem to be lifetime achievement awards.

Sometimes that is fitting. The endeavors of the people honored came over a period of time.

The past year has been different, and in a way that's wonderful for this community.

Two major citizen-led achievements took place in the past year. They were of such significance that during many other years we would have been happy to see ONE of similar importance.

They were the completion of the extensive restoration and renovation of the Ritz Theatre for the Performing Arts and the successful $2 million fund-raising drive to renovate and improve the Tiffin Stadium.

As a result, this past week's Outstanding Citizenship awards went to a pair of couples:

  • Bob and Elaine Hunt, who first suggested the stadium project be done with privately raised funds, and then led that effort that topped the $2 million goal.
  • Don and Dorothy Bero, for their positive attitude and energy in spearheading the huge endeavor of preparing the Ritz to be a model community performing arts center well into the next century.

The selection of recipients could not have been better.

These four people all would point out the large number of people who also had a hand in the achievements for which they were honored. But such things do not happen unless someone leads the way.

The other citizens of this community will be enjoying the benefits of the work of the Beros and Hunts for many years.

The honors bestowed upon them Thursday evening only scratch the surface of recognizing their importance of their contributions.
