Departing task force won't solve problems

The Seneca County sheriff announces a change, and right on its heels comes this editorial questioning his decision.

Is that a knee-jerk reaction?

If so, it might be in response to knee-jerk actions. ...

... Like Sheriff H. Weldin Neff pulling his department out of the county drug task force, even though none of the other participants knew he was unhappy with its work.

... Or like the sheriff announcing a new countywide rural crime fighting organization, about which none of the other prospective members knew anything unless they received a hurried phone call this week.

The changes appear to be spur of the moment. They just might be grandstanding in an election year ... or an instance of take-my-ball-and-go-home ... or both

As someone else said, in response to Neff's announcement, if a rural crime fighting group is needed, that wouldn't have to preclude the drug task force.

If improvements or changes are needed in the drug task force, Neff should stay in it and help bring about those changes.

Being a part of such an effort is not required of a sheriff, but constituents should expect it.

Walking away won't improve anything.
