Terrible notifying shouldn't be a part of season The message from the patrolman was stark. He told the high school students at New Riegel Tuesday about telling parents that their families had been changed ... terribly and forever. He also talked about seeing an increase in drinking and driving by people their age. It's a deadly combination at any age. But it's heightened when alcohol is added to the dangers experienced with young drivers and the celebrations at the end of the school year. The 1999 prom season passed in this area without tragedy. It is the hope and prayer of adults that the same is true as classes end and seniors graduate. The earning of a diploma and the embarking on a new phase of life should be a time of joy. That should not be robbed by alcohol, dangerous driving or a combination thereof. And the patrolman should not be faced with telling loving parents that their lives have been shattered.
