Time right for flying flag high and proud

There are many ways for Americans to honor those who died defending the nation and its ideals.

The tribute can range from taking part in official memorial ceremonies to silent and private tributes to the nation's war dead.

A visible way is to take part in the displaying of the American flag and bunting on this Memorial Day weekend.

A community with hundreds or thousands of well displayed versions of Old Glory is one in which it is obvious that citizens have not forgotten that the freedoms they enjoy today were bought at tremendous cost by those who went before them.

The veterans organizations annually do a splendid job of making sure that official memorial tributes &emdash; both ceremonial and in cemeteries &emdash; are in place.

The rest of us can take part by making sure the community is bedecked with flags and bunting.

Today and Monday are the perfect days to have the flag flying high and proud. It's the way the men and women who died serving their country would have liked it.
