Hats off

Officials work to stop sale of tobacco to youth

A tip of the hat to the Seneca County Health District, local law enforcement and the Seneca County Tobacco Opposition and Prevention Coalition for conducting inspections of local retailers to determine if they are selling tobacco to youth. Although the offending businesses were not charged, local law enforcement officials will follow up with a second inspection and then file charges if necessary. The program is designed to help decrease the amount of youth smoking.

Wank whips up tale that earns an award

Congratulations to Robert Wank, an 8-year-old from New Riegel, who was selected from 450 entrants as a regional winner in the Reading Rainbow children's writing contest. Wank has advanced to national competition with his tale of "Lalitha and the Silken Sari.'' Wank should be commended for his talent and initiative in competing in the contest.

Science camp gives students new insight

Calvert chemistry and physics teacher Ray Stearns should be recognized for planning the new science summer camp for fifth, sixth and seventh graders from St. Joseph and St. Mary's elementaries. The camp will help students learn how many toys, including yo-yos and silly putty, work. Students will have a chance to learn as well as enjoy themselves.
