'Other' energy sources untapped Back in the 1970s -- the last time gasoline prices reached record highs -- there was a resulting push to develop alternative sources of energy to oil. A lot of it was sponsored by the federal government. The results of the research efforts never achieved widespread usage, mainly because oil and gasoline prices moderated. Meantime, the use of coal faced increasing limitations because of problems with air pollution. And public fears -- mostly unfounded -- have halted advances in the use of nuclear power. If predictions prove true that fuel prices this time will remain at high levels, we will see the revival of the alternative energy pursuits. And if oil prices are elevated enough, the alternates will succeed. They faded before strictly because of dollars. If other energy sources cost more than oil, the public will buy oil. If the situation reverses, so will buying habits. And don't be surprised if those hybrid gas/electric cars from Japan show a sudden spurt of popularity.
