Electricity price caps harmful on long term Price controls on electricity would equate to prolonged problems with the price and supply of electricity. The people who are clamoring for caps on electricity prices are the same sort who for years campaigned against the construction of new generating plants. Those plants, if on-line now, would be providing an increased volume of power, meeting consumer needs and keeping prices down. Rate controls for electricity would have no benefit, unless political grandstanding is to be considered a benefit. Higher prices now, when demand is outstripping supply, will lead to the building of more generating capacity, which is the only real solution. Conservation should be pursued, but it never could be the prime answer to the problem. President Bush is holding fast against the outcry about price controls. He should continue to do so. Caving in not only would be harmful to consumers of electricity over the long haul, it would be mimicking the process that created the current predicament. |
