City not alone in owning old dump

The current officials of the City of Tiffin have inherited as nasty problem. The closed landfill the city owns on CR 90 obviously is going to be costly as it is monitored for environmental and public health safety in coming years.

These officials are not alone.

Not only are there more old landfills that should be investigated in the vicinity of Tiffin and in the rest of Seneca County, there are sure to be such buried wastes in just about every county in the state.

There are too many for them to be dealt with all at once. But all they should be located, categorized and checked as much as possible.

Officials of today are not to be blamed for what was buried in the '50s, '60s and '70s, a time when there were fewer rules and less knowledge about the dangers.

They are, however, responsible for doing what is proper today in regard to their inheritance of problems from the past.
