'In God We Trust' Just how badly has what was once the nation's moral consensus shattered? The existence of controversy regarding the Colorado Board of Education's suggestion &emdash; mere suggestion! &emdash; that schools post the motto, "In God We Trust," perhaps is all one need know about that. "In God We Trust" appears on all U.S. coins and currency, and has since 1864, when the nation's survival was very much in doubt. And by the reckoning of those agitators who cannot bear seeing or hearing the word "God" anywhere, the motto should not appear on money, either. Why? Because the placement of "In God We Trust" on currency and coins originally was religiously motivated. It was done at a minister's request. This flunks the ACLU's requirement of religious cleansing. "The arguments go back to religious motivation," says an ACLU spokesman. Yet the ACLU need not worry much about schools taking the board's suggestion. The anti-religious left has long since triumphed on the question at hand. The president of the state's largest school district explains that his district certainly won't be putting any trust in God: "I don't believe that public schools should be a forum for promoting religions." How tragically ironic that this controversy should emerge from Colorado. Last time schools there made big news, as we recall, the dateline was Columbine.
