Yes vote in Lakota is needed for future Residents of the Lakota School will be faced with another request for tax money in less than two weeks. Voters there have spurned two attempts to enact an income tax, one that would have been continuing and a subsequent one that would have been for five years. Now an 8.4-mill property tax is proposed. With a projected $600,000 year-end deficit, rejection of the levy will move the district closer to returning to debt, a situation that worsens the cost of returning to financial stability. The levy is a one-year emergency measure. That should appeal to any residents who are anticipating more state money for Lakota as the Legislature addresses a court-ordered school funding solution. The emergency measure would allow Lakota taxpayers to modify local taxation in response to state changes. Approval of the levy makes sense. Allowing the district to become forced to borrow state funds does not. Lakota residents through the years have shown &emdash; sometimes amid suggestions that the district should be disbanded &emdash; that they support a future for their schools. This is another time they are being called upon to do that.
