Martien is faced with big challenge

Dave Martien has been chosen to serve the City of Tiffin again.

He may find that implementing the city's sidewalk improvement program is a bigger job than either of the challenges he faced as police chief and then mayor.

Many of the city's sidewalks are not only nasty looking, they are dangerous.

Martien has been charged with developing a sidewalk program &emdash; using Fremont's as a starting point &emdash; that will replace the worst walks and ensure that adequate sidewalks are in place near schools.

Many property owners can be expected to acknowledge their responsibility to see that uneven and broken walks are replaced.

They will be most receptive to a program that allows them to get the best walks possible for the fewest dollars.

Even then, there will be those who balk at complying. That is when the good will and tact that Martien will bring to the job will prove the most valuable.

As the effort progresses, we would like to see addressed the "walkless" connector streets used by school children. Examples are Ella-Hopewell, Gibson Street, parts of South Washington and Miami streets, St. Francis Avenue and other such streets.

There is not intent by the city to place sidewalks on streets that were developed without walks. However, the streets mentioned above &emdash; some of which have partial walks &emdash; should be exceptions.

We wish Martien success in his new role. That will mean an improvement for Tiffin that is long overdue.
