Make this a safe school year

One of the first signs of the season is store shelves lined with pencils, folders and notebook paper.

Parents and their children have been purchasing clothing and supplies to begin their new year right. School personnel, from custodians to classroom teachers, have been preparing the buildings and curriculum.

School has begun in the area, with Old Fort starting Monday and most area schools opening throughout the week.

Taking the time to make going to and from school safe for youngsters is everyone's responsibility as the school year begins.

Keep a watchful eye out for children who are not watching for cars, and may dart across a street or between parked vehicles.

Make sure you slow down your car to make that 20 mph speed limit in school zones.

Remember to stop in both lanes for buses when they pick up and bring home children.

And parents, go over pedestrian and bus safety rules with your children.

Let's make sure all the children have a safe and successful school year.
