Saturday hats off

'With One Voice' offers help

A tip of the hat to Kim Spencer, whose compassion and determination will result in a performance of her "With One Voice" at 2 p.m. Sunday at Columbian High School. As author/composer/director/performer, Spencer has been the force behind the launching of the suicide awareness drama. She is using it as a tool to reach not only people at risk but also to educate members of the community on how to respond when someone they care about is hurting.

School back in session

The preparatory work of teachers, parents, administrators, staff members ands the youngsters themselves paid off this week with a smooth opening of parochial and public schools in the area. The return to school always is a bittersweet experience, with everyone involved happy to be back but at the same time peering out the windows at what still is summer weather. But education has resumed, thanks to the advance work of a host of people.

Scout project beautifies school

An Eagle Scout project by John Reinhart has resulted in beautification of the Tiffin Middle School. The 14-year-old took it upon himself to landscape the school's grounds. Now the school is framed by several islands of small ornamental trees, perennials and flowering shrubs, surrounded by mulch beds. Hostas and mums, are joined by dahlias and silver dusty millers. The side doors at Center Street have new bushes on top of the two small hills there. Reinhart raised more than $500 in donations from area businesses and individuals for the project.
