Number of tires needs to go down

The tire recycling facility on SR 231 southeast of Sycamore has had the same problem for many years.

There are too many tires.

Kirby's Tire Recycling does shred tires for recycling, but the outbound shipments never have been enough to offset arrivals and decrease the numbers of tires stored. The quantity remaining poses the threat of a massive, environmentally harmful fire.

There are an estimated 16 million to 20 million tires on the property.

With that kind of buildup, recycling of great magnitude could go on for some time -- without more tires arriving -- without a problematical depletion of the plant's inventory. It would pose a problem of retaining supply customers, however, if no inbound tires were allowed for the long term.

For now, a court order prevents more tires from arriving at Kirby's. At the same time, storage and fire-lane issues are to be addressed.

A plan is needed that results in an ongoing reduction of the number of tires on-site. The intent would not be to harm the Kirbys' business, but to protect people and the environment for miles around from the potential of a massive, smoke producing fire.
