Nation's leaders need our prayers

If you pray - and we're not quibbling about which faith - this is the time to be praying for the leaders of the United States.

President Bush has received praise from many quarters about his speech to Congress, the nation and the world Thursday night.

We agree. He made clear what the nation intends to do in order to root out international terrorism and to bring to justice those responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States.

The task at hand has been outlined. But accomplishing it will be complicated and bloody.

The decisions to be made in the coming months by Bush and those he commands will have the potential to blow up in his face. The forces of the U.S. and its allies will be trying to attack enemies who specialize in staying out of sight, often hiding in places occupied by unknowing civilians.

Not only could the task cost the lives of many American troops, it also poses the risk of increasing the nation's enemies if the wrong people are targeted.

Americans are now staunchly behind the president and his plan. They must remain so. It is certain that the war on terrorism will be costly and long. The nation's resolve must be strong and enduring.

And out leaders need our prayers. They will need them as they decide when, where and how to send the military against the enemy.
