Treasurer should be resigning in Attica A unit of local government having its finances declared "unauditable" by the state is an incredible situation. Seeing a state auditor's demand for 2-year-old financial records go unmet for almost six months is even more amazing. It's happening in the village of Attica. The clerk-treasurer, Linda Stoldt, has been under fire for more than a year because other village officials find themselves unable to determine how much money they have to spend. The state auditor has asked the attorney general's office to take action against Stoldt. What Stoldt should do is resign. That would give someone else an earlier start on trying to go in and straighten out the village's books, if that is possible. But, incredibly, Stoldt is on the ballot in a try for re-election. Leaving office would seem to be a better choice than being removed. But that doesn't seem to be in the cards ... the next one of which will be played by the attorney general.
