Needs of the gifted should be understood

A story on today's front page relates a noted educator's words about gifted children during her visit to Tiffin.

Part of the speech by Dr. Mary Ruth Coleman, a professor of gifted education at the University of North Carolina, dealt with the differences seen in children with special cognitive abilities.

Adults who are responsible for such children should heed her advice and that of other educators who realize the special needs of gifted children.

The goal should be to allow these youngsters to employ their abilities to the fullest without making them more different in other ways from their peers.

Gifted children do not need to be pampered. But they are much better off &emdash; as are other youngsters &emdash; if their needs are understood.

The Tiffin City Schools Gifted and Talented programs should be commended for bringing Professor Coleman to town. Parents of gifted children almost always can use the type of expertise she offers.

Interested adults who were not able to attend Thursday night can contact the Tiffin City Schools office for more information.
