Loss of life unavoidable in war to fight terrorism

As we Americans continue to learn how clues were ignored in the days, weeks and months leading up to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, we should acknowledge that the best of actions in response to those clues would only have delayed what we are experiencing now.

Let's face it. We would not be chasing down terrorists around the globe if our authorities had uncovered the plot to crash planes into the World Trade Towers and the Pentagon and other Washington buildings.

Foiling the terrorists' plans would have produced neither the national will to embark on our current war nor the international acceptance of such an endeavor.

We might have tightened some security measures for government and military installations. And there would have been a lot of talk, both by officials and news commentators, about the near miss.

That's mostly what happened after successive terrorist acts -- successful and unsuccessful -- against the United States in the past decade.

Thwarting the Sept. 11 tragedy simply would have postponed the day when the terrorists would have succeeded in killing thousands of Americans.

It was going to take that to get us going, whenever that day was to arrive.
