Choices for council are Hayes,

Edmond, Grandillo

Voters across Tiffin on Nov. 2 will elect a member of council at-large to fill the two years remaining on a term.

Also in Wards 3 and 4, there will be contests for the council seats representing those wards.

A noteworthy aspect of the candidate interviews at the A-T office was that all the council candidates were committed to seeing that action is taken to fix the problems after a current survey of the status of Tiffin's sanitary sewers is completed.

And as we noted in an earlier editorial dealing with the election, Tiffin residents have the advantage this election of having all solid candidates from which to choose. City government will be in good hands no matter who is selected.

With that in mind, The Advertiser-Tribune endorsements for the council races are:

At-large:

Democrat Mark D. Hayes versus Republican Brad Stephens

We believe that Hayes, appointed to the council seat after the death of Janet Wilson, has a better grasp of the issue facing the city.

He also brings to the office a dedication to represent all the people in Tiffin, regardless of their party affiliation.

His willingness to stand back from council chambers politicking in order to assess issues solely on their merits is something that voters may want to heed.

Ward 3:

Democrat incumbent Thomas J. Distel versus Republican Todd R. Edmond

Ideas are what Edmond has to offer. He can bring to the council fresh perspectives and a dynamic approach to tackling challenges.

Edmond also pledges a close working relationship with Third Ward residents by means of a series of town meetings. This ambitious plan to keep close tabs on the concerns and needs of people in the ward would go a long way toward getting citizens to feel they have a stake in what's happening in city hall.

Ward 4:

Democrat incumbent Michael A. Grandillo versus Republican David W. Einsel

Grandillo, the most senior of the seven council members who make the city's legislative decisions, has demonstrated leadership during his whole tenure.

He has been central to the council's role in the actions that have resulted in Tiffin's growth and the creation of potential for more growth during the last four years.

He can be expected to spearhead legislation needed for industrial development and upgrading of the sewer system if elected for another four years.

While recommending Grandillo, we also would suggest that his next term feature a greater measure of humility in dealing with residents and other officials and an increased responsiveness with Fourth Ward constituents seeking help or information.
