Mohawk levy vital for students' education

The debate concerning the 1 percent income tax renewal for five years for the Mohawk School District has been passionate. Both sides have been vocal and this paper has printed more letters on the subject than on any other contest.

The Mohawk board of education has been honest with how taxpayers' money is currently spent and what spending choices will be made if the income tax issue fails. A $900,000 shortfall will harm the basic educational program at Mohawk. The damage may take years to repair and the effect on current students would be impossible to calculate.

Voters in the Mohawk district need to separate the students' best interest from conflicts with the administration. Voting against the income tax to force the hand of the board of education will harm the education of students currently attending Mohawk. Personnel issues need to be resolved at a board of education meeting and not at the voting booth. We urge a yes vote on Nov. 7.
