Smokeout is chance to improve your health It is illegal to burn leaves in Ohio. The reason for the EPA regulation that prohibits such burning is the danger to the health of people who breathe in the smoke. In some cases, the reaction to inhaling leaf smoke can put lives in danger. On the other hand, there are millions of Ohioans who burn leaves for the specific purpose of breathing in the smoke. They're called smokers, and their habit makes them a danger to themselves and others. Some of them acknowledge the health risks and say they would like to stop smoking. Often they find themselves unable to quit because of the habit-forming aspects of tobacco smoking. Today, promoted as the Great American Smokeout, presents an opportunity for smokers to start to break the habit. The day offers fellowship and support for one who wants to stop. As reported today in a story about a stop-smoking program at Mercy Hospital, quitting can be most difficult. The smoker needs to be ready to stop, and often needs a lot of support from others who have faced the same situation. We'd urge anyone who smokes to make the attempt to stop. The health benefits to you or your family offer plenty of reasons. Unfortunately, with the large numbers of young people becoming addicted smokers at early ages, the Great American Smokeout is a day that will be around for a long time.
