150 years for 'Berg filled with successes

Survival for 150 years often is considered an accomplishment in itself.

Multitudes of institutions and businesses disappear a few years after they are started. Marking a sesquicentennial for them never is a consideration.

But beyond lasting a century and a half, what really matters for those that survive if what was accomplished along the way.

That is why people associated with Heidelberg College can look with such pride at the institution as it marks 150 years.

Generation after generation of graduates have gone off not only to achieve personal success, but also to make a better place of their communities and nation.

Through the years, many have gone on to advanced degrees at other institutions. And in recent years, there have been the opportunities for master's degrees in education, counseling and business right at Heidelberg.

The college's positive impact on this community has been widespread and continuous.

When that is mentioned, the focus often is on either the financial effects -- Heidelberg is among the top 10 local employers -- or the cultural, because of all the musical and dramatic offerings.

Easy to overlook are the thousands of alumni who stayed in the area to work and raise families after graduation. If the person next door isn't a Berg grad, a neighbor down the street is.

The prospects are excellent for continued success as Heidelberg starts on its second 150 years. The college can be expected to evolve to meet the needs of 21st century students, providing them an education that will enable them to prosper, individually and as citizens.
