Christmas shopping is in full swing.

Whether it is proving to be an enjoyable outing or a chore, it certainly is here.

For some families, "road trips" have come to be a part of the lore of buying Christmas gifts. The one-day journey can include a stop at a favorite restaurant in the city or a neighboring town.

Here's a brief reminder: Don't forget to check out what is being offered in a store near you. It shouldn't be a surprise, but merchants right at home offer most -- if not all -- of the same goods that can be found at the other end of the highway.

And the people behind the counters are the ones who live down the street.
