Generosity alive, well in this community

Sometimes people worry that Christmas has become entirely materialistic.

There is no doubt that the gift-buying frenzy is an indication of a large dose of materialism.

But as we have reported this season on scores of endeavors to assist neighbors across this community -- led by people from grade school children to senior citizens -- it is obvious that not every mind is focused solely on the pile of gifts under the family tree.

There is a lot of generosity afoot.

Residents of this community are thinking about their fellow men and women, especially those less fortunate or who are confined to home or an institutional setting.

We have no argument with those who would like to see a revival of the spiritual side of this holiday season. But we also think that behind all the lights, shopping and socializing, there remains a lot more of that in people's hearts than is evident on the surface.
