Third quarter spurt not enough for Mohawks
McCOMB -- St. Wendelin outscored McComb 15-6 in the third quarter to take a 36-33 lead, but succumbed to a fourth quarter comeback and lost to the Panthers, 50-49.
St. Wendelin (5-8) hit four 3-pointers, three coming from Stephanie Doogs and one from Melanie Saunders, and did not all a 3-pointer in nine attempts by McComb. But the Panthers forced 26 turnovers and got out to a 27-21 halftime lead. McComb outscored St. Wendelin 17-13 in the fourth quarter. For the game, the Mohawks outrebounded McComb, 35-23.
Doogs scored 13 points and came away with 11 rebounds for St. Wendelin, and Kristy Shumaker added 12 points and nine boards. Doogs also had three assists and two steals, and Shumaker had three steals.
Katie Pierce and Britney Podach pitched in eight points each for SW, which hosts Mohawk Thursday, and Saunders finished with seven assists and two steals.
Carrie Miller scored 11 points with five rebounds, and Becky Heller and Jessica Smith (six rebounds) chipped in 10 points each for McComb.
