Calvert's Walter, Mohawk's Haynes get state honor

Midland Athletic League Player of the Year Mike Haynes of Mohawk and Dan Walter, the top scorer on MAL champion Calvert, were named third-team All-Ohio, Haynes in Division III and Walter in Division IV.

Walter led the league in scoring with 20.1 points per game, getting him first-team All-MAL, District 6 and Northwest Ohio. The 6-4 senior finished his high school career with a banner year as the Senecas went 18-4 and took home Calvert's first MAL championship since 1989. He averaged 8.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.1 steals per game, shooting 53 percent (127-241) from two-point range, 35 percent (26-74) from three-point range and 70 percent (69-98) from the foul line.

Haynes, a 6-6 senior, was also first also first-team MAL, District 6 and Northwest Ohio. Haynes scored 18.7 points per game and led the MAL in rebounding with 11.1 per contest. He also had 28 assists and 19 steals to his credit and shot 49 percent (155-314) from two-point range. Mohawk finished the season 14-7, falling one win short of tying the school record for wins in a season and placing second in the league.
