Heidelberg College and Tiffin University split a twinbill Friday afternoon.

The Dragons, 7-9, erupted for five runs in the first inning and raced to a 10-1 win in the opener. In the nightcap, Heidelberg scored three in the third inning and went on to a 4-2 win.

"The first inning really got us off on the right foot,'' said TU head coach Ron Schumacher. "We got the five runs in the first inning and came right back with two more in the second to take command early.''

Misty Lawrence went 2-for-2 with a run scored and drove in three runs for the Dragons while Christy Prast had a triple and double to drive in two runs and also scored once and Jodie Moritz went 1-for-1 with two runs batted in.

Also, Missy Nichols went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI, Davin Berrier (Fostoria) went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and Colleen Hall went 2-for-3 with one run scored.

Emily Reande was the winning pitcher in the five inning contest. She allowed one earned run, three hits, walked two and struck out none.

Kristin Papushak, the losing pitcher, had a double and drove in a run to account for much of the Heidelberg offense in the first game.

In the second game, Trisha Beams got Heidelberg started in the third inning with a walk. After a sacrifice bunt moved her to second, Lori Zieber singled. She stole second to put runners on second and third. Bekah Naracki followed with a double to score Beams and Zieber gave the hosts a 2-1 lead when she scored on a passed ball. Shannon Kleve hiked the lead to 3-1 with a single to score Naracki.

Kleve went 2-for-4 to lead Heidelberg. She also had a stolen base to go with the RBI.

Jacy Burdette was the winning pitcher for the 'Berg, going the distance and giving up just four hits, striking out two and walking none.

"That is the best she's thrown this year,'' said Heidelberg head coach Angel Brown. "Except for that first game, we've been hitting the ball well and it showed in the second game.''

As a team, Heidelberg is hitting around .350 with Jadie Wheeler leading the way at .559 while Zieber checks in at .487 and Kleve is hitting .483.

"In that second game, we had a 1-0 lead, but they (Heidelberg) scored three in the third with two of the runs being unearned because of an error. Berrier had an inside-the-park homer for us in the seventh," added Schumacher.

Berrier was the offense for the Dragons in the second game, going 3-for-4 with a triple and home run and scoring twice.

Robin Farrand took the loss for the Dragons. She gave up four runs (two earned), five hits, walked four and struck out two. Michelle Slark came on to pitch the final two-thirds of an inning.

The Dragons open conference play today at home with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Ohio Dominican College. Heidelberg, 5-11, will play a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Sunday at Ohio Dominican College. In the first game, they will play Albion and take on ODC in the second contest.
