Warriors roll over BC

NEW WASHINGTON -- Mohawk scored in every inning but the seventh and had at least three runs in four innings, opening the season with an 18-6 win over Buckeye Central.

"We did a nice job taking advantage of walks," said Mohawk coach Jenny Weinandy, whose team is at home against Columbian today. "We got some good base running, and we played very well defensively. We still need to improve on our hitting, but it's too early to tell about anything yet for sure. I was a little nervous for my first game as a coach, but the girls were very prepared."

The Warriors scored five runs in the first inning, got out to a 10-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings and 14-2 after 3 1/2 innings.

Jodi Stevens and Ashley Walton had eight steals apiece. Walton finished with two hits, three runs scored and an RBI, and Stevens doubled and scored four runs.

Maggie Phillips had two hits to go with three runs and two RBI, and Katie Lust had a run and an RBI with two hits. Other singles came from Michelle Brose (run), Julia Hannam (two RBI, run) and Deanna Kirian (run, RBI). Amanda Payne scored three runs and Stefanie Pauley scored once.

Brittany Platt was the winning pitcher, and Amber Schwochow threw in relief for four innings.

Eagles battle back to beat SW

FOSTORIA -- St. Wendelin scored twice in the first inning and built a 3-0 lead through three frames, but Eastwood rallied to beat the Mohawks in the season opener, 6-3.

"We started out really well," St. Wendelin coach Theresa Webb said. "The big thing was we struck out 10 times, and six of them were looking, including three in the sixth inning. We need to at least put the ball in play and let them field it in those situations. Overall, we played all right and it was a good start to the season."

Stacy Radcliff had a pair of hits and drove in a run for SW, and Jessica Kramb also singled twice. Other hits came from Kristy Shumaker (run) and Amanda Kramer (RBI). Kendra Reinhard and Melanie Saunders each scored a run, and Melanie Saunders drove in one.

Saunders was the losing pitcher, striking out two and walking none in a complete game.
