Senecas open season with win

Calvert built a six-run lead and then held off a rally to win its first game of the season over Norwalk St. Paul, 7-6.

The Flyers (0-2) scored five runs in the sixth, but Calvert pitcher Sarah Stover came back to shut St. Paul down in the seventh and pick up the win. Stover struck out seven and walked five, giving up just four hits and two earned runs.

"We had some errors in the sixth, but Sarah didn't let it bother her and she came back really strong in the seventh," Calvert coach Bob Grothaus said. "For a first game, it was really good. We did some things wrong, but the girls recognized them and I hope we've got them out of the way."

Natasha Carpenter had three hits, two RBI and a run, and Megan Marinis had a triple as one of her two hits and drove in two runs. Audra Lewis scored three runs, had two hits and an RBI, and Stover and Hillary Hepp chipped in singles. Ashley Hepp and Jenny Galipeau scored runs for Calvert, which is at home against Gibsonburg today.

Comeback bid falls short for Mohawks

ELMORE -- St. Wendelin pushed two runs across in the top of the seventh inning, but it was too little, too late to avert a 4-2 loss to Woodmore.

Melanie Saunders took the pitching loss for the Mohawks (0-2), striking out five and walking one. She also singled at the plate. Other hits for St. Wendelin came from Kristy Shumaker, Kendra Reinhard and Jessica Reinhart, who also scored one of the runs.

"We had a couple of baserunning errors that hurt us," St. Wendelin coach Theresa Webb said. "The walks didn't really hurt us because they were spread out, but they scored on two passed balls."

St. Wendelin takes on Liberty-Benton and Arcadia at Fostoria High School Saturday.

Carey can't hold early lead

MT. BLANCHARD -- Carey scored the first four runs of the season, but Riverdale rallied to win the first game of the year for both teams, 13-5.

"I was pretty happy with the way we started," Carey coach Dan Harrold said. "We had six errors, but that will straighten itself out with time. I just hope it doesn't build up into a bigger problem, and I don't think it will."

Kelly Risner had an RBI and a run along with a single for Carey. Katrina Putnam (run) and Danielle Fletcher (RBI) had hits, Jackie Zender, Tiffany Fletcher and Mary Ann Bays scored runs, and Erin Roark contributed an RBI.

Lindsay Caudill took the loss in six innings of work, striking out two and walking none.

Carey goes to Lakota Friday.
