Clutch hitting gets Warriors win
SYCAMORE -- A pair of sophomores homered in the fifth inning, and coach Brent Konkle's debut was a success as Mohawk upended always tough Colonel Crawford, 10-5.
"I was hoping we'd play better defense, but we hit the ball really well when it counted," said Konkle, whose team is at Columbian today. "We got key hits from two sophomores, but I thought our seniors really stepped it up too. When it came down to crunch time, our seniors got on base. It was a good first game."
Jackie Chester struck out nine and did not walk a batter in picking up the pitching win. All of Colonel Crawford's runs came in the fourth inning, and none of them were earned.
Sophomore Jodi Stevens came through with a two-run single in the second inning to give Mohawk a 2-0 lead. After the Warriors fell behind, sophomore Ashley Walton tied the game at 5-5 with a three-run home run in the fifth inning. Stevens hit a homer two batters later to put the Warriors up for good.
Mohawk scored four runs each in the fifth and sixth innings.
Mohawk had 13 hits, including three each from Stevens (five RBI, two runs), Walton (three runs, three RBI) and Nikki Keller (two runs, RBI). Mindy Davidson had a hit and an RBI, Jaclyn Tooley had a hit and two runs and hits also came from Deanna Kirian (run) and Chester.
Tiffany Pinion had three hits for Colonel Crawford, which was limited to five total hits by Chester.
Raiders open season with extra-inning win
KANSAS -- Ashley Lockmiller doubled twice, including the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth inning, as Lakota topped Oak Harbor, 3-2.
Lakota (1-0) scored twice in the bottom of the second inning and held that lead for most of the game, but Oak Harbor (0-1) came back with two in the top of the seventh to force the game into extra innings.
With one out in the Lakota half of the eighth, Ashley Ray and Jenni Bomer hit back-to-back singles. Lockmiller followed with the second of her two doubles, scoring Ray with the winning run.
Lockmiller was also the winning pitcher, striking out three and walking four in a complete game effort. She held OH to two hits. Annie Greener (four Ks, two walks) took the loss for the Rockets.
Bomer joined Lockmiller with two hits for Lakota. Other singles came from Ray, Maria Lowery, Crystal Miller (run) and Renee Chaney.
The Raiders are at Fostoria today.
Panthers claw Calvert in late innings
SANDUSKY -- Calvert was locked in a scoreless tie Sandusky St. Mary through two innings and trailed 3-0 after three and 3-1 after three and a half, but the Panthers tacked on five in the fourth and eight in the fifth for a 16-1 win over the Senecas.
Calvert got three base hits, two of them coming from Amanda Margraf. Natasha Carpenter also had a single. Ashley Hepp scored the run.
Sarah Stover was the losing pitcher, giving up four earned runs. She struck out three and walked six.
"We were in it until those last two innings," Calvert coach Bob Grothaus said. "In those last two innings, we made errors to keep them at the plate. We had some mental errors that really killed us, and I think a lot of it had to do with early game jitters. We just need to leave this game in Sandusky and come out swinging in Norwalk."
The Senecas visit Norwalk St. Paul Wednesday.
Errors bring down SW in opener
PEMBERVILLE -- Eastwood led just 1-0 after two innings, but errors opened the door to 14 Eagle runs in the next two innings of a 16-1 win over St. Wendelin.
The Mohawks (0-1) retired the first two Eastwood (1-0) batters in the third, but Eastwood scored eight runs after that and tacked on six more in the fourth and one in the fifth to put the run-rule in effect.
Ashlee Warren struck out two and walked six in four innings of work for St. Wendelin, taking the loss.
"I was happy with the way Ashlee pitched," said St. Wendelin coach Theresa Webb. "We're very inexperienced in the field, and we just made too many errors behind her."
St. Wendelin also struggled at the plate, getting just two hits and striking out seven times. Jamie Frederick had a single and an RBI and Cassi Filliater singled. Emily Urbanski scored the only SW run.
St. Wendelin is at Arlington tonight.
