Baseball games

Sixteen hits help Calvert to first MAL win

BETTSVILLE --  Calvert scored nine runs in the top of the first inning and broke a five-game losing skid with a 22-0 win over Bettsville in an MAL game.

"We needed a win badly, and we got one," Calvert coach Rick Demith said. "It was nice to get everybody in, and Ryan Keefe did a real nice job pitching. He's a freshman and he's the only lefty we have. We hit the ball real well for the first time all year."

Keefe struck out two and walked two in picking up the win, throwing a three-hitter. Don Lawrence was the losing pitcher.

Eric Lee had a triple as one of his two hits, and added five runs and two RBIs. Scott Frank doubled twice, scored a run and drove in four, and Robbie Ritzler had a double, two runs and two RBIs for the Senecas (4-5, 1-2 MAL).

Dustyn Risner (three runs, three RBIs), Jon Raitz (two runs, four RBIs), Bart Fisher (run, three RBIs) and Tim Brodman (three runs, two RBIs) added two hits each. Alex Plotts scored a run and had an RBI single, Joe Harvey singled and scored three runs and Eric Puffenberger had a hit and scored a run.

Lawrence, Eddie Sisco and Jason Lee singled for the Bobcats, who fell to 3-5 overall and 0-3 in the MAL.

Calvert is scheduled to be at Liberty-Benton today. Bettsville hosts Danbury.

Tigers roll on

FREMONT -- Seneca East scored three runs in the first, third and sixth innings of a 9-0 MAL win over Fremont St. Joseph.

Seneca East (6-0, 3-0 MAL) is in action again Wednesday, when it hosts Calvert. Fremont St. Joseph falls to 5-5 and 3-1.

Mike Breyman went 5-for-5 for the Tigers to raise his average to .952. He doubled and homered, scoring three runs and driving in two. Kurt Weaver was 3-for-4 with a double and homer, two runs and two RBIs, and also got the win on the mound for the Tigers. Weaver threw a three-hitter, striking out 12 and not walking a batter, to improve to 3-0.

Jason Burkholder added two hits and two runs for the winners, and the Tigers got one hit each from Brian Bischoff (run, RBI), Nate Dentinger (two RBIs), Ryan Wagner (RBI) and Rusty Wagner. Andy Hall scored a run.

"Considering the weather, I think we hit the ball exceptionally well," Seneca East coach Frank Lamoreaux said. "Kurt threw an exceptional game, and Brian Bischoff is getting so much better behind the plate. It's key to have a catcher back there who knows how to handle our pitchers, and he's getting very good at that."

Zach Sanchez, Matt Gabel and A.J. O' Neal singled for the Crimson Streaks. Gabel was the losing pitcher.

Big innings lift Mohawk to big comeback

SYCAMORE -- Carey scored the first 10 runs of the game, but Mohawk made up much of the difference in a seven-run third inning and went on to take an MAL contest from the Blue Devils, 14-13.

"It was just one of those games where I was very proud of the way the kids played," Mohawk coach Phil Kimmet said. "Both teams hit the ball well, and neither one deserved to lose. I asked the kids if they wanted to quit or battle back. It was up to them, they battled back and I'm proud."

The Warriors (6-8, 2-2 MAL) added two runs in the fourth inning and five in the fifth. Carey (0-8, 0-4 MAL) fell just short in its own comeback effort with three runs in the sixth.

"The kids played very hard, and we hit the ball well considering the weather," Carey coach Dennis Ruhe said. "Gabe (Stansbery) threw the ball the best he's thrown it all year, and it was his misfortune that the strike zone was called so small on a day when the weather was so bad. There were 22 walks between the two teams in a six inning game. (T.J.) Marcotte pitched well for them, and I can't fault the kids. They played so hard."

Marcotte got his first win with 4 2/3 innings relief, striking out two and walking five. Nate Lofay was the starting pitcher. Shane Thompson took the loss in relief of Stansbery.

Zack Hufford finished with three hits, three runs and three RBIs for the winners. Kraig Lease (two runs, four RBIs), who picked up a save in relief of Marcotte, tripled, and doubles came from Lofay (two runs) and Chad Sowers (run).

Brandt Weininger (run) had two RBIs to go with his hit, as did Zack Ekleberry (run), and Marcotte and Mark Gaietto had two runs and a hit each. Ryan Hohman drove in a run.

Thompson was 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs for the Blue Devils, and Tyler Overbee (two runs, three RBIs) cracked a homer. Gavin Miller had three hits and three runs, and Stansbery added two hits, a run and an RBI.

Byron Hart (run), Tim Atkins (three runs, RBI), Lawrence Derr (RBI) and David Bratton (two RBIs) had hits for Carey.

Carey is at Vanlue today, and Mohawk's next game is at Van Buren April 25.

OLD FORT -- North Baltimore scored four runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the sixth to improve to 6-2 overall and 5-0 in the MAL with an 8-5 victory over Old Fort.

Nick Kerlin fell to 1-2 on the mound with the loss for the Stockaders (4-4, 3-2 MAL) despite throwing a complete game and giving up only one earned run. He struck out two and walked three. Aaron Heyman was the winning pitcher, getting five strikeouts and four walks.

Jason Stallard was 3-for-3 with two doubles, a run and two RBIs for the Stockaders. Nick Margraf singled twice and scored a run, and Matt Hoke blasted an RBI triple. Chad DeMonte singled, Cliff Cleveland scored two runs and Aaron Burks crossed the plate once.
