Warren puts clamps on Arcadia
FOSTORIA &emdash; Ashlee Warren allowed a hit to the second batter of the game, but that the only hit Arcadia would get in a 13-1 loss to St. Wendelin.
Warren (2-5) struck out 12 and walked three in her one-hitter as the Mohawks improved to 4-6 overall. St. Wendelin scored four runs in the first inning, one in the second and seven in the third to build a 12-0 lead.
At the plate for St. Wendelin, which ended a four-game losing streak, Jenny Smith was 2-4 with two runs and a triple, finishing with five RBI. Stacie Wood (three runs), Melanie Saunders (two runs) and Warren (two runs, RBI, triple) chipped in two hits each while Kristen Burns (RBI) and Britney Podach (RBI) singled.
''I think Wednesday (a 25-5 loss to Bettsville) kind of woke us up and told us that we have to come to play every day,'' St. Wendelin coach Theresa Webb said. The Mohawks are at Hopewell-Loudon Monday night.
Tornadoes turn one over to Willard
WILLARD &emdash; In an important early season battle in the Northern Ohio League, Willard scored two runs on errors and another on a steal of home to swipe a 4-3 victory over Columbian.
The loss was the first in the league against two wins for the Tornadoes (7-3). The Flashes improved 4-3 and 2-1.
Columbian scored in its first at-bat, but Willard tied it in the bottom of the first by stealing home. Then in the third, three Tornado errors led to two Willard runs without the benefit of a base hit.
Columbian bounced back with single runs in the fifth and sixth to tie the game. In the seventh, however, a walk, sacrifice, and base hit resulted in Willard scoring the winning run on a close play at the plate.
Becka Tipton was the winning pitcher over Kathleen Kisabeth (5-3), who struck out four.
At the plate for TC, Kassy Mies had a pair of hits. Leslie Koehl had Columbian's lone RBI. Also getting hits were Erin Bowers, Christy Lofton and Kris Keirns.
Next week will be an important one for the Tornadoes. There are six games on the slate, beginning with a home game Monday against Shelby. The rained out game at Norwalk has been rescheduled for Wednesday.
Knights make Lakota fourth SLL victim
KANSAS &emdash; Otsego pushed across a run in the third inning and scored three insurance runs in the seventh for a 4-0 win over Lakota.
Struggles at the plate continued for the Raiders (6-6, 1-4 SLL) as they were one-hit by Erin Donelson of Otsego (7-1, 4-0 SLL). It was the second straight one-hit game for Lakota.
Donelson struck out nine and walked four. Ashley Lockmiller took the loss for Lakota, striking out two and walking eight in a complete game effort. She gave up just five hits.
Jessica Wyant had the Raiders hit, a single. Kris Shultz had two hits for the Knights.
Lakota is at Northwood Monday.
Steinmetz sizzles for Warriors
MINFORD &emdash; Andrea Steinmetz struck out 15 batters as Mohawk rallied late in the opening round of the Minford tournament for a 5-3 victory over South Webster.
Steinmetz allowed three hits and and three walks. ''Webster couldn't touchher,'' Mohawk coach Carl Long said. ''She pitched an excellent game.''
Despite the strong pitching, Mohawk still needed a seventh-inning rally to break a 3-3 tie. Ashley Walton opened with a single and was sacrificed to second by Nikki Keller. After Jodi Stevens was walked, Natalie Phillips brought home the go-ahead run with a single.
Stephens provided the power for the Warriors with a home run, double and three runs scored.
Jenny Dials was the losing pitcher for South Webster, giving up seven hits and two walks.
Mohawk plays Symmes Valley at 2 p.m. today.
