Calvert alone atop MAL

ATTICA -- Calvert is the only team left unbeaten in Midland Athletic League play after getting three runs in the top of the sixth and holding off a late rally to beat Seneca East, 5-3.

"Being on top for the moment feels a lot better than the last couple of years have felt," Calvert coach Bob Grothaus said. "The girls have had a great attitude the whole season. I was worried we'd come out flat after losing to Liberty-Benton Tuesday, but they really came out fired up and ready to play. Seneca East has got a very good team."

Amanda Margraf was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and Audra Lewis had two doubles, a single and two runs to lead Calvert (7-5, 4-0) at the plate.

Anita Casillas (run, RBI, double) and Natasha Carpenter (run) had two hits apiece, and Ashley Hepp singled in a run. Sara Stover scored a run, and Megan Marinis had an RBI.

The Senecas outhit the Tigers, 11-4. Stover struck out seven and walked one in improving to 6-3. April Hafner (4-1) took the loss.

Haleigh Conley (run, two RBIs) tripled and Megan Nagel doubled for Seneca East (6-2, 3-1). Kelly King (run) and Charissa Thompson added singles, and Julie Bumb scored.

Seneca East's runs came with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

"We just did too little, too late," Seneca East coach Rick Bumb said. "Stover pitched a real nice game, and Calvert played good defense behind her."

The Senecas are at Danbury Monday. The Tigers host New London today.
