Reinhart fires no-hitter for H-L
BASCOM -- Junior pitcher Kerstin Reinhart threw her first career no-hitter and Elizabeth Hoover had a great day at the plate as Hopewell-Loudon beat up on New Riegel, 16-1.
The win keeps the Chieftains (8-3, 5-0 MAL) undefeated in the MAL. Reinhart, who improves to 7-1, gave up an unearned run, struck out six and walked two. Hoover was 4-for-4 with three runs and five RBI, clubbing three doubles and a triple.
Holly Thom (two doubles) and Kate Gase (three runs) backed Hoover with three hits and two RBI each for the winners, and Reinhart had two hits and two runs. Other hits came from Beth Cook (triple, three runs, two RBI), Natalie Walter (two runs), Michelle DeVault (two RBI), Lindsay Borer (RBI), Sarah Hayward (run), Nan Harber (run) and Ashley Frankart (run). Hopewell-Loudon had 19 hits as a team.
"Kerstin's been throwing the ball really well, and lately we've really started to hit the ball like I knew we could all year," Hopewell-Loudon coach Steve Adelsperger said. "Our bats are really coming alive, and we'll be a team to be reckoned with if that continues to happen."
Raeann DeMoss scored the only run for New Riegel (3-7, 1-3). Jenny Gibson took the loss on the mound.
Hopewell-Loudon hosts Liberty-Benton today. New Riegel is at home against St. Wendelin Wednesday.
Stranded runners hurt TC in extras
GALION -- Columbian stranded 11 runners, including three in scoring position in the last two innings, and dropped 10-inning NOL decision to Galion, 5-4.
Both teams are 7-5 overall and 3-3 in the NOL. Columbian is at home against Bellevue today and will face second-seeded Fremont Ross in the sectional semifinals at Bucyrus Saturday.
The Tornadoes left the bases loaded in the fourth, had runners on second and third with one out in the eighth and failed to score and also failed to score with a runner at third and no outs in the ninth. Galion won with two outs in the 10th on a delayed double steal.
"It was a nice, defensive game for the most part," Columbian coach Mike Hampp said. "We just couldn't get a clutch hit when we needed one. We didn't move the runners along like we should. We had chances to win."
Erin Rupp (5-4) threw a complete game for Columbian, striking out 11 and walking one. She gave up five runs, but only two of them were earned.
Lisa Hess, who drove in two runs, and April Vanover and Kristin Seitz, who each scored a run, had two hits apiece for Columbian. Nikki Kuhn (run, RBI) and Jessica Sharp (RBI) had hits, and Kris Keirns scored a run.
MILLBURY -- Lakota scored three runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back, outhitting Lake 14-5 en route to beating the Flyers, 7-2.
Ashley Lockmiller, Jessica Rupright and Kristen Lentz had three hits apiece for Lakota (12-1, 5-1 SLL), and Lockmiller turned in another sterling pitching performance, improving to 10-1. She tossed a five-hitter, striking out seven and walking two. Lori Huber was the losing pitcher for Lake (5-7, 1-5).
Lockmiller doubled and finished with two runs and three RBI. Lentz drove in two runs and Rupright had one RBI. Jenny Bomer had a single and two runs to her credit, and Jamie Ray, Crystal Miller and Megan Stoudinger had a hit and an RBI each. Lacy Hager singled and Maria Lowery drove in a run.
Dawn Kolirinski had two hits, including a double, and Jenny Liptack (RBI) also had two hits for Lake.
Lakota tries to get its sixth league win tonight at home against Gibsonburg.
FREMONT -- Erin Rau picked up her ninth victory of the year in a 14-2 trashing of Fremont St. Joe.
Rau (9-1) pitched five innings only giving up three hits to go along with her one strikeout. Jennifer Seigley came in to pitch the final two innings of the game.
Randi Whitman continued her hot hitting for the Stockaders (12-2, 4-1) as she had a double and two singles to go along with her three RBI's and two runs scored. Julie Koch finished the game with three singles and an RBI.
Rau had the big bat for the Stockaders going 4-for-5 with three RBI's and two runs scored.
"This was the seventh game in a row that our defense has been flawless," said coach Ron Rau. "Our hitting is starting to come around at the right time, especially in time for a big game against Seneca East on Wednesday."
