Bucyrus holds off Columbian

Bucyrus scored big in the middle innings and held on to edge Columbian, 10-7, Thursday.

The Redmen, 3-9 overall and 3-4 in the Northern Ohio League, overcame a 4-2 deficit with four-run outbursts in the fourth and fifth innings and held on the rest of the way. Aidt had a two-run homer to key the uprising in the fourth inning.

"Tonight, we just did not play good baseball," said Columbian head coach Adam Schmucker. "We made some mistakes in the field and had eight walks given up by our pitchers. They (Bucyrus) got timely hitting

they turned in three inning-ending double plays."

Jamie Moore had a pair of doubles and Mike Porter also had a double to lead Columbian, which had a 13-10 edge in hits. Moore finished with a 3-for-4 outing, John Slosser went 2-for-4 and Kyle Albert went 2-for-3.

"We hit the ball hard, but left eight runners stranded on the bases and it could've been even higher than that if it wasn't for those double plays they got to get them out of three innings. I'm really disappointed that we're not getting a consistent pattern of play," said Schmucker.

Despite getting roughed up for 13 hits, Winch was the winning pitcher. He gave up four earned runs, struck out six and walked one. Sophomore Anthony Theis suffered the loss. He pitched the first three innings, gave up six runs (four earned), six hits, walked one and struck out one. Slosser and Moore followed him to the mound.

"That was Anthony's first varsity pitching appearance and he's only a sophomore. He learned some valuable lessons which will help later on," said Schmucker.

The Tornadoes, 4-12 overall and 3-5 in the league, travel to Norwalk at 4:30 p.m. today for another NOL battle before taking on Ashland at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Division I sectional tournament at Mansfield's Arlin Field.
