Columbian fends off Bucyrus

Despite having five upperclassmen out due to injuries, Columbian held off Bucyrus Thursday, 5-3, behind a complete game from Erin Rupp.

"We were really hurting with everyone out, but we played the best game we have all year," Columbian coach Mike Hampp said. "If we play like that, we'll win some ballgames down the road. April Vanover and Nikki Kuhn came through with some clutch hits."

Vanover had three hits and drove in two runs while Erin Drew also pulled the hat trick in the hitting department. Kuhn smacked a double and added an RBI and Kaila Dunn drove in a run to complete the scoring for TC.

Rupp got the complete game win, giving up two earned runs in the top of the sixth inning. Rupp, who improved to 6-4, struck out five and walked two.

Chieftains squeak past Buckettes

BASCOM &emdash; Kerstin Reinhart wasn't in her familiar starting role, but the senior came in relief and pitched Hopewell-Loudon to an eight-inning, 9-8 win over Buckeye Central.

"We didn't play very well, especially at the beginning," H-L coach Steve Adelsperger said. "Coming off that big win yesterday we expected maybe a little let down, but we didn't play very good defense."

Reinhart struck out eight in the four innings she was on the mound and allowed three hits. Brandi Sipe took the loss after going the first 7 1/3 innings. She allowed 13 hits and nine earned runs.

Biz Hoover and Holly Thom each smacked longballs for the Chieftains while Beth Cook and Thom each ripped two-baggers. Kate Gase, Sarah Hayward and Ashley Frankhart each had two base hits.

Stockaders knock around Wynford

BUCYRUS &emdash; Old Fort rapped 16 hits and scored in all five innings as the Stockaders belted Wynford, 16-1.

"We hit the ball very, very well tonight," Old Fort coach Ron Rau said. "It was so windy; there was dust flying all over the place. But, we had some fun and everyone got to play tonight. We're starting to play much better and Jenny (Seigley) threw a real good game."

Seigley not only was the winning pitcher, but she belted a home run over the centerfield fence and drove in three runs. On the mound, she struck out five and walked two.

Jenice Egbert and Erin Rau (two doubles) also drove in two runs each while Randi Whitman (RBI) had a pair of hits as did Julie Koch, including a pair of doubles.

Old Fort scored one run in the first, but poured it on with six in the second and five more in the third.

Blue Devils topple Arcadia

ARCADIA &emdash; Ashley Harrold had a pair of hits and drove in three runs as Carey belted Arcadia, 11-2.

"It was very windy today, but our defense played well; they had too," Carey coach Dan Harrold said. "It was so windy that balls to to the shortstop were caught in foul territory."

Ashley Harrold was also the winning pitcher as she went the distance, allowing just one earned run and striking out four. She gave up just three hits and walked three.

Amanda Daugenbaugh, Stef Orians and Ashley LaRoche (two hits, run) each had RBI singles.

Gibsonburg blows past St. Wendelin

FOSTORIA &emdash; Big innings were the rule for Gibsonburg in a 19-2 romp past St. Wendelin Thursday.

After being held scoreless in the first, the Golden Bears erupted for three runs in the second, three in the third, seven in the fourth and six in the fifth to end the game after five innings.

The Golden Bears had a 12-hit assault with Warren leading the way with a triple and double. She went 3-for-5 and scored four times.

The Mohawks, falling to 4-10, got a single apiece from five different players including Cassi Filliater, Ashley Warren, Kristy Shumaker, Annie Peiffer and Ellen Gregory.

Warren was also the starting and losing pitcher with her record dropping to 3-9. She struck out nine and walked five in four innings.

The Mohawks will take on Hopewell-Loudon at approximately 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Old Fort Division III sectional tournament.

New Riegel blasts Van Buren

VAN BUREN &emdash; New Riegel broke open a close game with a 13-run uprising in the third inning and went on to a 27-5 win over Van Buren Thursday.

The Blue Jackets, 5-7, held a 3-1 lead until the third inning outburst. They also added seven more runs in the fourth and four in the fifth to get the game called after five innings.

Leanne Wertz belted a home run and Erin Mack added a triple for the only extra base hits by the Blue Jackets, who got two hits from Kristen Tiell, Jenni Schalk and Wertz. Leadoff hitter Renee Lafontaine also had a single and walked four times and scored five runs while Raeann DeMoss, Wertz and Jenny Gibson each scored three times.

Gibson was the winning pitcher for the Blue Jackets. She gave up four runs, one hit, walked five and struck out two over the first three innings. Mack pitched the final two innings, giving up one run, two hits, walked two and struck out one.

State-ranked Eagles down Seneca East

ATTICA &emdash; State-ranked Colonel Crawford broke a 1-1 deadlock with a six-run uprising in the third inning and went on to an 8-3 win over Seneca East Thursday.

The Tigers, falling to 11-4, got doubles from Cassie Holmer and Karen King and Julie Bumb also lashed out a pair of singles.

Shannon Rachel went the distance for the win. She gave up two earned runs, struck out four and walked five. Jolene Williams (4-1) started for the Tigers and gave up three earned runs, walked five and struck out three. April Hafner pitched two scoreless innings.

"We had three errors and they got four singles in the third inning," said Seneca East head coach Rick Bumb. "We just really couldn't get anything going after that and they (Colonel Crawford) are a very good team."

Huron clubs Calvert on Johnston gem

HURON &emdash; Rebekah Johnston fired a two-hitter and received all the support she needed in the second inning as Huron downed Calvert, 15-1.

The Tigers, 10-6, plated 11 runs in the second.

Johnston, who has pitched every inning for the Tigers, struck out 16 and walked none and only allowed two hits. Natasha Carpenter suffered the loss. She gave up seven earned runs, nine hits, walked seven and struck out two.

"She's the best pitcher we've seen this season," said Calvert mentor Bob Grathaus. "She had very good control of her pitches and they (Huron) are having one of their best seasons in a long time."

Amanda Margraf and Carpenter each singled for the Senecas, who dropped to 1-9 heading into today's home battle with Toledo Central Catholic.

Fostoria rallies past St. Joe

FREMONT &emdash; Fostoria rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to take a 7-4 win over Fremont St. Joe Thursday.

Fostoria, now 5-8, began the comeback with a three-run fourth inning and overtook the Crimson Streaks with four runs in the sixth.

Darcie Correll walked to start the sixth inning and Michelle Lykins followed with a bunt single. Jessie Echelberry walked to load the bases. Abbey Sheeks singled up the middle scoring Correll with the tying run, but Lykins was thrown out trying to score on the same play. Brittani Rathburn had a bunt single and Brittany Snyder singled in another run. After a fielders choice, a wild pitch allowed Rathburn to score and Tracy Lee singled to score Snyder with the final run.

"We gave them three unearned runs in the first inning and had no errors after the third inning.," said Fostoria coach Mike Lee. "Rathburn came on to pitch in the fourth inning and held them down."

Rathburn hiked her record to 5-4. She allowed no runs, walked five and struck out six in four innings of work. Starter Lee gave up four runs (one earned), struck out three and walked none. Melissa Geller was the starting and losing pitcher for St. Joe, which dropped to 5-8.

Lykins was perfect at 4-for-4 while Lee, Echelberry and Sheeks each had a pair of singles and the latter also drove in three runs.
