St. Wendelin rules in win over Old Fort
FOSTORIA - Chad Feasel cleared the bases with a triple in the bottom of the sixth inning, sending St. Wendelin to a 16-6 run-rule victory over Old Fort in the final regular season game for both teams.
St. Wendelin, who plays in the Division IV regional semi-final at 4:30 p.m. Friday in Castalia, finished tied for third in the Midland Athletic League with Calvert. Both teams are 6-4 in the MAL. The Mohawks are 20-7 overall.
The Mohawks will face Kidron Central Christian in the second game following Calvert against Southington Chalker in game one in regional play.
''We hit the ball very well tonight,'' St. Wendelin coach Paul Feasel said. ''We came in a little sluggish because of the long weekend and it took us a couple innings to hit the ball, but once we got started it really rolled for us.''
Matt Rieter slugged a three-run home run in the fifth inning. It was his fourth round-tripper of the season. Mike Shoemaker added a two-run double and Andy Faber also doubled.
''That's the kind of thing we're looking for - getting the big hit when we need it which is going to be very important for us down the line.''
Cory Maag (1-0) was the winning pitcher in his second start of the season. He lasted four innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits, striking out three and walking two. Mike Shoemaker cleaned up the final two innings, allowing two runs.
Old Fort closed the season with a 10-12 overall record, 5-5 in the MAL.
