Newark wins Babe Ruth tournament

Newark Moundbuilders did all of its scoring in the first two innings Wednesday and it proved to be just enough in a 5-4 win over Springfield in the championship game of the Ohio Babe Ruth State Baseball Tournament for 13-year-olds.

Taking control early, Newark bunched together four hits to score three times in the first inning and they came back to add two more runs in the second without the help of a base hit.

Held to just two hits over the first three innings, Springfield got on the board with a pair of runs in the fourth with the help of two hits and added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Doug Stevens drove in two runs with the help of a home run to lead Newark while Chris Hoffer had a double and drove in a run, winning pitcher Sean Spires and Danny Bankes each singled to drive in a run and Tony Cannizzaro and Kyle Dyar each singled to round out the attack.

Harold Newton had a double and single and Jim Arnold singled twice and drove in a run to lead Springfield, which had a 7-6 edge in hitting. Andy Daggett and Matt Wilson each singled to drive in a run while Joey Hixon doubled and Danny Trennor drove in a run.

Newark now advances to the regional tournament which will be played in Vincennes, Ind., the middle of next month.
