Chieftains open with strong win over McComb

McCOMB -- Hopewell-Loudon opened up the 2000 volleyball season much like it had closed out the last several seasons --with a strong win.

The three-time defending Division IV state champion Chieftains rolled to a 15-7, 15-1 win over McComb Monday behind a balanced scoring attack and the hitting talents of junior Lauren Kelbley.

The 6-2 Kelbley slammed down 11 kills and two blocks and served up five points for Hopewell-Loudon.

Three of Kim Norris' eight points came off aces and she also had three kills.

MacKenzie Crum added five points and four kills, Staci Jones had four points and three kills, Anna Bumb served up three points and Emily Clouse and Beth Cook each had two points and a block.

Clouse also had 25 assists and a kill while Cook knocked down six kills and had three digs.

Mohawks power past Arcadia

FOSTORIA -- Leslie Yoakum and Jamie Frederick combined for 19 points and 20 assists Monday to guide St. Wendelin to a 15-13, 15-5 season-opening win over Arcadia.

Yoakum tallie three aces and 12 points from the service line for the Mohawks and added 10 assists while Frederick had seven points and 10 assists.

Three of Erin Maag's four points were off aces and she also had four kills. Mallory Noe aded four points and six kills, Marcy Souder had three points and Lenore Haymaker and Jennie Arend both smacked five kills.

Arcadia got five points apiece from Brianne Beck and Alisha Rhoten.

Warriors battle past Riverdale

MOUNT BLANCHARD -- Amber Schwochow and Leah Tanner each served up nine points to help Mohawk battle past Riverdale 9-15, 15-12, 15-13 Monday to open the volleyball season.

Tanner also had four aces in the match.

Callie McClean served up seven points, Megan Martin had six points and Erin Bates added four points while Ashley Bowers tallied four points and three aces.
